Today we went to visit Chapin's Apple Orchard and the children had such a great time despite it raining on us! We learned a lot of new facts about bees and apple trees. We even learned some new songs! After spending some time in the classroom, we were off to the apple orchard. In the apple orchard we learned that we aren't the only ones who enjoy apples! The mice do too. They like to nibble at the bark of the tree, which can damage the tree. So, the people at the apple orchard have placed wire guards at the bottom of the trees to prevent them from nibbling at the bark. Then, we learned about
grafting trees so that one tree can create more than one type of apple. After, we got to eat an apple and enjoy a story about apples. They were juicy and delicious! We also learned that they call the seeds "pips". The last part of our field trip was making apple cider. We watched as a parent volunteer and our guide crush the apples and press them down to make the cider. The apple cider was tasty and many of us wanted seconds.
Due to the heavy frost that we encountered in May, we weren't allowed to pick apples from the trees because there just wasn't enough. However, we do have a small batch of apples that we are hoping to use to make applesauce later in the week.
