Celebrating Diversity

This week we read the book It's Okay to be Different by Todd Parr to help celebrate our differences. Before the reading, two children stood in front of the class while the rest of the class discussed what was the same and what was different between our two friends. After the reading, we went back to the page that said It's okay to be proud of yourself. We shared moments that we felt proud about something we did. Then, we shared ways we were different than everyone else. The children were very respectful to one another when sharing their thoughts with the class. Once our discussion was complete, the children went to the tables to complete an It's Okay to be Me! self-portrait.

On Wednesday, the children looked at a brown egg and a white egg. We shared how they were different. We all agreed that they looked different on the outside. Then, I asked them "Do you think the two eggs look the same on the inside?" Some children responded with yes and some children responded with no. As we cracked both eggs, we found that they were the same on the inside. The overall message to this activity was that we may look and act different on the outside, but we are all the same on the inside. After, we each shared a favorite activity that we like to do.

On Thursday, we visited the book It's Okay to be Different again and decided we were going to write our own version of the book. So, the children were off to the tables to create a page for the book using markers and paper. I was very impress with how hard they worked on their pictures. Stay tuned to see the final product.
