The 3 R's and All About Insects

Today, Recycle Rhonda, from CSWD, came to visit our classroom (she'll be in our classroom the next two days) to teach us about the 3 R's (plus 1):  Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Respect.  She taught us how to know if something should go into the trash, the compost, or the recycling bin.  The children had fun learning about the landfill (there is only 1 landfill in our state) and sorting different foods and materials into piles of  trash, compost, or recycling.  Here are some videos from today's visit.

Ask Your Child Tonight About:
  • Some examples of materials that could go into the compost, recycling bin and trash.
  • To show you to the dance to help them remember the 3 R's
  • Something they could reuse instead of putting it in the trash
We had our first Four Winds workshop, which focused on insects.  During Four Winds, the children enjoy a puppet show that introduces the main content of the lesson and then they participate in some activities to reinforce what's being taught.

During today's puppet show and during our brief discussion afterward, the children learned that insects have several different life stages.  Most insects go through 4 stages (complete metamorphosis), while others go through 3 stages (simple metamorphosis).  We sang a song to help us remember the different body parts of the insect. After the discussion, we went outside to search for insects.  We found caterpillars, a fly, grasshoppers, and ants.  Our last activity had us learning about insects using a variety of signals to find a partner.  Fireflies use light patterns to find their partner and crickets make noises to find their partner.

Ask your child to share with your what their favorite part of today's workshop was.
