Sharing Stories, Saying Goodbye, a New Math Station

This week we began Writer's Workshop through oral storytelling.  The last two days, I've read two books surrounding the children with the sound and language of storytelling.  On the first day of our storytelling session, I shared my own story of my dog getting sprayed by a skunk, which sparked the children's excitement of wanting to share their own stories, which most of the children felt comfortable doing in front of the class.  We repeated the same steps today.  Here are some videos of some children sharing their stories.

Over night, another butterfly emerged from it's chrysalis and the children were equally as excited as the first one.  We let our butterfly go this afternoon (she was hesitant).  We still have two chrysalis left and we will be waiting patiently for them to arrive.

In math, the children learned how to play a new game (click on the word game to see the video), which was placed in the rotation of their math stations today.  In this game, the children are having fun hiding the lunch box under a number.  Their partner needs to guess where the lunch box is hidden.  This is an engaging game that works on number recognition and will be used throughout the year, but will be differentiated to meet the needs of the children.
