In the beginning of the school year, I like focusing with the children about what makes us who we are, what makes us the same and what makes us different to instill kindness and empathy in our classroom culture.
One of the books we read was I like Myself. Using Seesaw, the children drew and recorded what they liked about themselves. Make sure to check out your child's Seesaw account to hear and see what they said.
We also read the book It's Okay to be Different. We had a nice discussion about the importance of no matter how different someone may look or act, that we always treat them with kindness as we are all the same inside. After, the children created their own unique portraits, which were inspired by the author and illustrator, Todd Parr, of the book It'is Okay to be Different. Your child's unique portrait has been posted on their Seesaw account.
We read a book called Brontorina to inspire us to think about what we were hoping to learn and do this school year. In this story, the children learned that Brontorina really wanted to be a ballerina despite her size (she was a large dinosaur!). She persevered through some difficult situations and in the end she was able to become a ballerina. After, the children reflected about what they hoped they would learn this year in kindergarten. They have posted their goals on their Seesaw account for you to see and hear.
