Apples!

This week we focused on learning about the life cycle of an apple.  On Monday, we read a book titled From Seed to Apple.  Prior to the reading, I shared with the children that sometimes authors want to teach us something about a particular topic.  So the children's job during the reading was to find something that the  author taught them about apples.  After the read aloud, the children turned and talked about what they learned and then were asked to illustrate their learning on paper.

We also completed an apple experiment that had us inquiring if an apple would sink or float in water.  The first thing we did was we passed around the apple to help us determine if it would sink or float.  Then, we illustrated our individual predictions in our science notebooks. Ask your child what he or she said the apple would do.  The next day, we performed the experiment and found out that the apple floated!  We discussed why we thought the apple floated and we then went back to our science notebooks and illustrated our observations/conclusions.

Another activity we did this week had us making apple trees out of construction paper and drawing Johnny Appleseed.  The next time you are in the classroom, come check them out!
