In writer's workshop, we have been learning about what growing artists do. We created this anchor chart to help us remember what we do when we are drawing pictures in our books that we are creating. Ask your child if they can name one of the things we do.
In one of the activities this week, the children counted bugs on ten-frames, arranged them in order on the pocket chart, and matched numeral cards to the pictures. During this activity, the children practiced structural math talk (sharing how many bugs were on the card and justifying how they knew); a key skill in getting children to talk about their thinking and also listening to their partner's thinking.
Last week the children were introduced to a new math work place: Which Bug Will Win?. This activity combines graphing and counting while exploring probability. To complete this activity, the children choose a spinner, recording sheet and circle the spinner they chose on the recording sheet. Then, they spin the spinner and mark the appropriate box above one of the bugs to show the results. The children continue to spin and record their results until one column is completely full.
