Reader's Workshop, Applesauce, and Letters

This week we are launching Reader's Workshop with Learn-About-the World Books (non-fiction books).  The children searched around the classroom yesterday looking for one word they could read.  At first, many of them didn't think they could find a word, but after a little looking around, they soon discovered they could read!
Today, the children learned that readers don't just read stories, but they read books to learn about the world.  They practiced reading informational texts during the lesson and during private reading time, by studying pictures closely.

The children were able to read independently for 3-4 minutes.   We will continue to work on building out stamina throughout the school year.
The first official 3 letters have been introduced.  These letters will be the focus for the week.  Ask your child to say the letter, keyword, sound for each of the letters.  Some other activities you could do at home include finding these letters in the books you read to your child at night, thinking of objects that begin with that letter, or form the letters using playdough.
In math, the teen numbers were introduced today during number corner.  Have your child count forward from 1-19 and for a challenge, have them count back from 19-1.
Yesterday, we made applesauce, using our apples from the field trip, with Mrs. Dyer's class.  Each child had a turn to cut up apple slices.  Then, our apples cooked all day in the crock-pot.  At the end of the day, we enjoyed some yummy applesauce!

Here are some other pictures from this week and last week.
