We've been busy this week and the children are having a blast!

On Tuesday, we read the book It's Hard to Be Five by Jamie Lee Curtis. After the book, we created a graph showing who was 5 in our class and who was 6. Then, we practiced making "I noticed" statements. We immediately noticed there was only one friend who was 6 in our class! After, we colored a person to resemble each one of us. Next, I hung them on our wall showing who is 5 and who is 6in our classroom. When a child's birthday comes around, I will be moving their person to the 6 year old row.

On Wednesday, we read the book Froggy Goes to School. After the book, we created a graph showing how we got to school that day. Again, we made "I noticed" statements. We noticed most of our friends take the bus to school. Then, we illustrated how we got to school.

We began Number Corner, which is a component to our math program. The number corner lessons and routines revolve around the classroom calendar. There are four basic components: a calendar, which the markers always are in some sort of pattern, a chart that tracks the children's month in school, a birthdate chart, and a link chart to which a link is added for every day the children come to school.

The pattern of markers for this month (September) features 4 shapes: triangle, square, circle, and rectangle, which are arranged in an ABCDABCD pattern. In Our Month in School chart, the children are posting new number cards each day they come to school. For example, it shows the numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4, to show we've been in school for 4 days.

The last exciting thing I wanted to share with you is that we had 2 monarch caterpillars that were brought in by Mrs. Boutin. We had placed them in our tank on Tuesday and they began crawling around. By Wednesday morning, one of the caterpillars had turned into a chrysalis and the other caterpillar was hanging like the letter J. During morning meeting, it quickly turned into a chrysalis. Now, we are patiently waiting for them to turn into beautiful butterflies.
