Beginning Our Math Program

Last week we began our math program,Bridges We were introduced to Work Places. Work Places provide activities and/or games that are engaging and relevant to what we are learning in the classroom. They are also designed to be used independently. Pattern blocks, unifix cubes, polydrons, and geoboards and bugs have been introduced. Although the children will be exploring with these materials for the next couple of weeks, they will also be working on facilitating inventing, creating, communicating, sorting, counting, and community building skills.

We have also been learning a lot about shapes including what type of sides they have (curved or straight sides) and how many corners they have. We've been sorting shape cards by their size, by what type of sides they have, how many corners they have, and what type of shape they have. These activities have been great in getting children to talk about their thinking and justifying how they know it's a particular shape.
