Butterflies Galore!

We've been learning about the life cycle of a monarch butterfly and learning about what the word metamorphosis means. We've read a lot of books about butterflies and have even acted out the life cycle using our bodies. This week we created the life cycle of a butterfly using pasta pieces. The children first created their pictures. Then, they glued the different pasta pieces to represent each stage. The final step was labeling the stages.

After reading the book Waiting for Wings by Lois Elhert, we learned that butterflies have symmetrical wings. We examined pictures of butterfly wings of different types of butterflies to see if they were in fact symmetrical. And they were! For a follow up project the children created butterflies with symmetrical wings using paint.
