Poetry Unit

This week the children began learning about poetry and everything that it entails. They learned that poems can be about anything! We are focusing on free verse poetry, which is a very simple, but engaging, form of poetry (no rhyme or patterns). The way this unit was introduced to the children was first I shared with them poems that other kindergarten students have written. Then, I wrote a poem in front of the children. Finally, we had a shared writing and wrote our first poem as a class.

Finally on Thursday, the children brainstormed different topics they could write about in their poems. After, the children were off to write their very first poem! Today, they continued to write more poems and it seems it is becoming easier as they gain more experience with poetry. The children can't wait to share them with you on June 14th!

The children had also written some spring poems last week, which is another great form of poetry for kindergartners. Check out their writing below!
