We had another Four Winds workshop this morning put on by our wonderful volunteers. This month's topic was on Beavers, a very fascinating topic! We learned that beavers eat bark and twigs with their orange teeth. Beavers have to gnaw with their teeth daily because their teeth continuously grow(they grow up to 3 ft a year). They have "super" lungs, which allows them to stay under water for 15 minutes. Their tail is leathery, scaly, tough, and is shaped like a paddle. Beavers will tail slap (sounds like a gun going off)to warn their family of danger and to scare predators. They have excellent hearing and will close their ears and nostrils while swimming underwater.
After the puppet show, the children got to pretend to be beavers and gnaw on carrots and pretzel rods. Many of the children found it easier gnawing on the pretzel rods than the carrots! The children also go to touch and see real twigs/sticks that beavers have gnawed on and got to feel how soft a beaver fur really is by touching a sample of its fur. At the end of the workshop, we viewed some pictures of beavers in their habitats.
There have been sightings of beaver activity on the bike path near the other school. I encourage you and your child to walk the path to try to find activity of beavers (near the bridge).
