Sugaring in the Woods

Today we visited the Audubon center to learn about maple syrup and how it's made.  The children had a blast exploring the woods and were not bothered by the knee deep snow or the ice!  By the end of the trip they were exhausted.

In the sugarbush, we collected sap, which was poured into a mini evaporator, drilled holes into a tree to hang a sap bucket, collected 40 gallon size jugs (it takes 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup), and searched for birds in the sugarbush.  We also tasted the 4 different grades of maple syrup.  Ask your child to share with you what their favorite part of the trip was.
