Shapes seem to be the common theme in Unit 5 of our math program. The children have been working with two dimensional shapes, including hexagons, rhombuses, and trapezoids.
In several of the lessons, the children had to sort their shapes based on their attributes. They also explored estimating and counting pattern blocks with a partner and then created a graph that displays the shape that occurs the most and the shape that occurs the least.
As a class, we also sorted shape cards by different attributes and graphed the cards and compared groups.
There have been several math stations introduced so far in this unit. Below is a description of the stations introduced.
Circles and Squares Race to Twenty
In partners, children take turns rolling a die numbered 0-5 and coloring in that number of circles or squares on the game board. The first child to land exactly on 20 wins the game.
Geoboard Shapes
Children are choosing a Geoboard shape card to copy onto a geoboard.
Shapes & Spinners Graphing
At this station, children spin a Shapes Spinner and draw the indicated shape on a graph. They continue until one column of the graph is filled.
Spin & Count Shapes
In this partner game, partners take turns rolling a die and spinning a Shapes Spinner to determine how many of which shape to fill on their graph. The first partner to fill in three rows win.
Hungry Caterpillars
Again, this is another partner game. Partners take turns spinning a Shape spinner, finding the matching pattern block and placing it on their caterpillar. The first one to fill their caterpillar wins the game.
Pattern Block Designs
Children choose a pattern block design mat and create the design using pattern blocks, and then with paper shapes on paper. After, they record the number of each shape used in their design.
