In math this week, the children began solving story problems. On the first day, the children acted out the story problems by being seals and whales. Then, the next day, the children solved shark and whale picture problems by showing their math thinking on white boards. Many of the children drew pictures to show how they were getting the answer, while some of the children took on the challenge of writing a number sentence (3 + 2 = 5) to go with their picture. After, some of the children were called upon to share their thinking with the class. In this coming week, the children will begin making their own story problems!
The children have been busy creating stories in writer's workshop! They've been learning new ways to begin their stories by using the poster Ways to Begin a Story that is hanging on our wall as a reference. We also looked at how famous authors begin their stories and see how we can incorporate the same beginnings in our own writing. The children have also been learning about capitalization and when to use it in their writing (the beginning of a sentence, people's names, days of the week), the importance of having spaces between words, and making sure they are creating meaningful pictures that include details.
We had read the book I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!by Dr. Seuss. After the story, we brainstormed where readers like to read.
We learned a song titled the Maple Syrup Story, which the children really enjoyed. Once we became familiar with the song, the children illustrated the song in a book format. When they bring it home this coming week, have them sing the song to you as you look through their beautiful illustrations.
Maple Syrup Story
First you take the tree and you tap it, tap it.
Then you take the sap and you gather it, gather it.
Then you take the sap and you boil it, boil it.
Then you take the syrup and you pour it, pour it.
Then you take the syrup and you eat it, eat it.
Maple, maple syrup!! Yummy, yummy!
Maple, maple syrup!! Yummy, yummy!
