Shapes, Reading Signs, and Anticipation of the Leprechaun Visiting

Math
In math, we've been continuing to learn about two-dimensional shapes (squares, circles, rectangles, triangles).  The children have been introduced to many new math stations in the past week that focuses on 2D shapes, counting, and equations.

Hungry Caterpillar is a new game using pattern blocks.  In this game, each player takes turns spinning a shape spinner and filling up their hungry caterpillar with pattern blocks.  The first person to fill up their caterpillar is the winner.

Here are some pictures and videos from this game.

This month's calendar pieces feature ladybugs.  Each day, 1 more ladybug is added to the calendar piece.  The children are given opportunities to determine how many more ladybugs would be needed to make a set of 10.  This is a concept that we will be continuing to work on for the remainder of the year.

Reader's Workshop

The children have been learning about reading signs (periods, exclamation marks, question marks, quotation marks). They've been learning how to recognize these and how to use them in their own reading and even in their writing.  See if your child can find some reading signs tonight during your reading time together.

Explore Time

With no prompting, some of the children have been creating a house for the Leprechaun, who they are anticipating visiting around St. Patrick's Day, in the block area.  They've been having fun labeling the house as well.
