How to catch a leprechaun

On Friday, the children had a blast creating leprechaun traps in the classroom using recyclables, tape, and string.  They were engaged in this project for 50 minutes!  And I think they would have kept going if it wasn't nearing the end of the school day.  Prior to building, the children were placed into 4 groups.  They planned how they would build their trap and then, got their materials and started building.  All the groups were able to collaborate with one another as ideas were shared and applied to the traps.  I was so pleased with how well each group worked so nicely together.  Click the link below to see the leprechaun traps in action!

This morning, the children walked into the classroom to find that the leprechaun had in deed visited the classroom, but with a little disappointment, the children didn't capture a leprechaun.  That silly leprechaun left quite the mess with his 'magic' dust along with some coins and what looked like to be leprechaun confetti!

We collected all the coins, estimated how many we thought the leprechaun left and then counted them.  We found out there were 59 coins!  Each child was able to bring home 3 coins.
