Four Winds: Tracks and Traces

On Wednesday, the class enjoyed a workshop all about animal tracks in the snow. As part of an ongoing theme of 'patterns in nature' the children were able to observe and act out the four main animal track patterns. 1. Galloping: Tracks of animals such as the rabbi,t where the back feet land ahead of the front feet. 2.Bounding: Bounders' back feet land in the front feet tracks. An otter or Fisher Cat is good example of an animal in this category. 3. Waddling: Not designed for speed but rather for ambling along on short legs. Raccoons, porcupines and bears fit into this category. 4. Walkers: Tracks that appear in almost a straight path that change with increasing or decreasing speed such as a dog and a cat.
The children had a chance to experience what it felt like to be some of these animals and move around trying out the different types.Since it was a glorious 40 degrees outside on Wednesday, we all suited up and took a walk on the bike path to see if we could spot any fresh tracks. While we didn't have a chance to see any that day, many of the children told stories of tracks they have noticed in their backyards. It also allowed us to spend an extra 15 minutes out on the playground after the workshop was over! Thank you so much to all the Four Winds volunteers who help out each month!
