What Makes an Insect an Insect?

Today we had our first Four Winds workshop, which focused on insects.  The children watched a puppet show and learned that not all bugs are insects.  So, what does make an insect an insect?   An insect has 3 body parts, compound eyes, antennae, 6 legs, and has an exoskeleton.  See if your child can tell you what characteristics insects have.

After the puppet show, the children built different type of insects out of felt pieces and compared each one.  Then, they went on an insect safari where they explored the school grounds searching for insects and other creatures.  We found ants, bees, beetles, a grasshopper, woolly bear caterpillars, and a spider.  Ask your child if they caught any insects and/or bugs.
