Reader's and Writer's Workshop Update Part 2

Right after the Thanksgiving break, we wrapped up our Reader's Workshop Unit on Partnerships.  During this unit, we were focusing on retelling the story of Goldilocks and The Three Bears.  The children practiced retelling this story with their reading partner using a flow map and the characters, acting out the story, and finally creating a book that allows them to practice retelling the story during independent reading time.  For our celebration, the children enjoyed Teddy Grahams while reading their books.

Last week we started our new unit: Digging Deeper.  We read the book Chicken Little and have been using this book for multiple lessons.  We've been focusing on characters, specifically knowing what a character is, describing individual characters, comparing two characters, and making connections with the characters.  This week we will start learning about settings and then move into reading high frequency words (sight words).

In Writer's Workshop, we've been learning about narrative writing and continuing to build our writing stamina.  The children were introduced to the story hand, which will help them to remember what they need to include in their stories.  The thumb represents the characters, the pointer finger represents the setting, and the last 3 fingers will help the children to remember to include at least 3 things that happened in their story.  We will continue to work on writing words with our stories and including very detailed pictures.
