Dogs and cats have come in to replace March's morning, afternoon, and evening pictures. This month, the children actually created the dogs and cats by drawing ovals, triangles, and circles onto construction paper. Then, they had to cut out their shapes and assemble them to resemble dogs and cats. The children did a fantastic job following directions! Once their new calendar pieces were created, we worked together to develop a pattern using their markers. As a class, we decided to have an AABB pattern.
In Our Month in School chart, dogs and cats are used as a springboard for a probability experiment. The children were shown a dog and cat spinner and shared their observations. It was very obvious that the cat had more room on the spinner than the dog. Then, we completed a fun activity to see if the arrow would land on the cat more often than the dog by spinning the spinner 10times. As I was spinning the spinner, each child kept score on their own whiteboard. The children did an excellent job representing their data on their boards without any guidance! Through this activity, the arrow landed on the cat 6 times and on the dog 4 times.
After this activity, the children helped color dog and cat cards to be used in the chart. Each day, we spin the spinner to see if we are going to add either a dog or cat to the chart depending on where the arrow landed. We will be using this data to write addition sentences to reflect the number of dogs and cats on the chart from time to time as well.
