Four Winds: Woodland Deer

Last Friday, we had our wonderful Four Winds volunteers come into the classroom to teach us about woodland deer. The children learned a lot of new information about these herbivores. We learned deer are connected in countless ways to other living things in their habitats. For example, the bucks shed their antlers in the winter, which allows other animals, such as squirrels, to chew on the antlers, which is a great source of calcium. In one of our activities that we did, the children got to see how much food a deer needs to eat daily to survive in the winter (2 1/2 lbs of twigs). We also learned that deer can clear a 8 foot fence and jump 25 feet in a single bound. Ask your child to share something new they learned about deer. Enjoy the slideshow!
