Here are what some of our lessons have focused on:
- Representing our ideas on paper through pictures and words
- Learning about the saying "When We Are Done, We Have Just Begun."
- How to be an independent writer
- Using the word me to label ourselves in our pictures
Below is a sample writing piece that shows a student labeling their picture.
The children are learning that they are the authors of the their stories, which means they get to decide if they need to add more to their pictures, add words, or begin a new piece. The chart is used below to help them know what options they have as writers. This chart will be used throughout the year.
Ask your child what they've been writing about. Can they spell or write the word me? Ask them to share what they can do if they think they are done.
Remember, if your child is interested in writing at home (great!) and they want to know how to spell something, ask them the following question: What sound do you hear first? I want them to see themselves as writers as I'm also building those independent skills. As your child acquires more letters and their sounds, the writing process will become easier for them.
