Launching Readers Workshop

Independently Reading
Partner Reading
We began Readers Workshop last week and the children are loving getting opportunities to look at books during this time.  During Readers Workshop, a mini-lesson is taught, focusing on a skill that we hope the children will use during their independent reading time.  After the lesson, the children get an opportunity to read books at the tables.  Next, they read with a partner.

The mini-lessons have focused on the following:

  • Reading Books to Learn about the World (non-fiction books)
  • Reading Independently and with Partners
  • Reading a book from Cover to Cover
  • The Importance of Rereading
We've also started learning the letters and their sounds of the alphabet in small groups.  Last week, the letters b, m, r, s were introduced.  This week, the letters t, n, g, p were introduced.  When learning the letter names, the children echo back the letter name, keyword, sound.  For example for the letter b, it would sound like this: b. bat, /b/.

Also in small groups, the children are also working on sorting objects and pictures by their beginning sounds.  In addition, they are working on forming these letters correctly.

During morning meeting, we've been having fun searching for our new letters within our message and hearing stories about specific letters.
