5 Frames, 10 Frames, Manipulatives, Number Writing, and Games

In math, we've been working with 5 frames and 10 frames.  These are tools that we will be using throughout the year.  With the 5 and 10 frames, we've been working on recognizing them, building them on our own frames, and looking at the frames and showing the number of dots using our fingers.
Earlier this week, we had fun making a number line by putting the 10 frames in order and matching the numeral to the 10 frame.  Next week, we will work in partners to match 10 frames with numbers.

We've been working hard at practicing writing numbers 1-5, using whiteboards, iPads and through games.  We use rhymes to help us remember how to correctly form the numbers.  These rhymes were sent home in your child's Friday folder a few weeks ago.

During math stations, we've been exploring different math manipulatives: geoboards, polydrons, pattern blocks and unifix cubes.  In addition, two new games, Spill 5 Beans and Beat You to 5, have been introduced.

Spill 5 Beans,
In this game, the children get 5 kidney shaped beans (red on one side, white on the other).  They shake their beans.  They count or subitize (instanly know without counting) the number of red beans and record that number on their sheet.  They continue to play until at least one number gets to the top.

Beat You to 5
In this game, the children are playing with a partner.  They spin a spinner and add that many cubes to their board.  They continue playing until one person has gotten 5 cubes.  Here is a video of 2 children playing the game.

This week on Seesaw, the children talked about what patterns they were noticing in the September calendar.  Make sure to check out your child's Seesaw account.
