Before the break, we began discussing plants and what they need to survive. I posed the question "What would happen if we were to plant a Lego and give it space, light, soil, and water?" (everything plants need to survive). Most children thought it wouldn't grow, but really couldn't explain why it wouldn't grow.
As a class, we planted a Lego. Then, we drew and wrote about our predictions in our science journals. Here are a few examples of what children wrote:
Today, we read the book Living and Nonliving, which helped the children come to the conclusion that a Lego is a nonliving thing as it doesn't breathe, eat, grow or reproduce. See if your child can give you examples of some living and nonliving things.
