October Number Corner

Calendar Grid

This month's calendar markers feature red, green, yellow, and brown maple leaves blowing in the wind.  Each day, the children have been predicting the color and number of leaves they'll see on the marker, as well as the direction in which the leaves are blowing.

The children have had many opportunities to use and model words indicating the direction the leaves are blowing.  They have also used the Doodle Buddy app on the iPad's to create pattern strips for the calendar markers.  As you can see in the markers, there are 3 different patterns.  Ask your child to share one of the patterns with you.

 Calendar Collector

This month, we've been collecting Unifix cubes in two different colors.  Each week, we've placed 10 orange and 10 blue cubes in a sock box.  Each day, the number corner helper spins a 1-4 spinner and takes the designated number of cubes out of the box.  With this activity, we have explored different combinations of cubes that might come out of the box based on the number the helper has spun.  For each week, we have counted and compared all the cubes we've collected to see if we have gotten more orange or more blue cubes along with finding the total amount of cubes.  With these activities, the words more and less have been used to describe the amount of orange and blue cubes collected.

 Days in School

We have continued to keep track of how many days we've been in school using ten-frames, links, and a number line.  We have been having great discussions on how many dots and links are needed to make 10.

Computational Fluency

We have continued this month to use finger patterns to represent numbers 0-5, using both hands.  We have also explored ways to make 5.  The children will be completing a page from their Student Number Corner Books that will provide practice with combinations of 5 using five-frames.

Number Line

I think this has become the children's most favorite part of number corner as Hap, the grasshopper, comes for a visit and helps them learn their numbers through games and counting.

The children were introduced to the teens number family (10-19).  They learned that 10, 11, and 12 are the funny ones in the family as all the other numbers have "teen" names.  We've been practicing counting forward and backward within 19.  The children have also played a game called Hide & Seek with Hap, which has the children guessing where Hap's friend, Hop, is hiding.  The children have also been learning and practicing rhymes that will help them write the numerals 6-10.  Please use these rhymes (a copy was sent home in your child's Friday folder a few weeks ago) with your child when they are practicing writing their numbers at home.
