Plants
After the April break, we began learning about plants, including learning about the different plant parts and what plants need to survive. We read several non-fiction books about plants, including a book about the life cycle of a sunflower. The children also completed an art activity that had them creating a plant using a variety of craft materials and then labeling the parts of a plant (petals, seeds, roots, stem, leaves).
We also conducted a science experiment where we placed some flowers in a brown paper bag and taped it shut for 5 days. We drew our predictions of what we thought would happen in our science journals. Many of us thought the flowers would die because they would get no sunlight or water. On the 5th day, we pulled the flowers out of the bag and noticed they had wilted. We recorded our observations in our science journals.
Lastly, we planted flower seeds in the classroom. The children had the opportunity to choose between 4 different seeds. They made some observations about their seeds in their flower journals. They have been excited as their plants have begun growing! Each week, the children are drawing and writing what they are observing about their plants in their flower journals. They will be sharing their observations with you toward the end of the school year.
