Four Winds: Birds

Posted by Picasa
Last Friday, our wonderful Four Winds volunteers came into the classroom to teach us about forest birds and the different layers of the forest (canopy, understory, shrubs, forest floor). We were introduced to some different types of birds, such as the Sapsucker, the Black-Capped Chickadee, the American Woodcook, and the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. The children participated in many different activities, including experiencing how birds avoid competition for food by occupying different layers of the forest, looking for birds in the trees and identifying them using a reference guide, and playing a fun game of Maro Polo where the children experienced how birds stay in contact with others of their kind through song.
