Classroom Update

Last week the children created new calendar pieces for the month of May, which happened to be frogs and toads. The children created these pieces using construction paper and they look adorable on our calendar! We voted as a class on what pattern we would like to see on the calendar and decided on an AABBAABB pattern. We are using a Frog and Toad spinner this month to determine what kind of card (frog or toad) to put in the Our Month in School chart each day. Prior to doing this, the spinner was spun 10x and the children had to keep track of how many times we spun a frog and how many times we spun a toad. The children did an amazing job organizing their data on their whiteboards. We will keep track of how many times we spin a frog or toad using a graph. Just like last month, we will also write a number sentence daily showing how many frogs and toads we have so far in our chart.
Before the April vacation, we had planted flower seeds. When we returned from the break, many of us found that our flowers had grown a lot, especially those who planted Nasturtiums. We've been reading books about plants and seeds. We've learned how to label the parts of a flower. As a follow-up, the children created their own diagram of a flower using string, a straw, seeds, and construction paper. Next time you and your children are out and about and see a flower, ask him or her to tell you the parts.

Last week, we started exploring a new app on the IPADS titled Scribble Press. This app allows the children to create books using a program that is similar to the PAINT program. Then, with the help of me, they add words to their stories. The children had a blast beginning to write a book as this was a different approach for them. They are hoping to share their books with you when they are completed.
