Owls

Today our Four Winds volunteers presented another workshop on Owls. After the puppet show, we learned about the different adaptations that an owl has. For example, they hear really well and have big eyes so that they can see at night. The children looked at pictures of different types of owls. Then, they listened to a CD of different sounds the owls make. We learned that some owls sound like horses and dogs and the Barn Owl makes an awful screeching sound!

The children found out what an owl pellet was and how and why an owl can swallow their prey whole. Most of the prey is indigestible, such as the fur, bones, and feathers. This is what is coughed up (the pellet). After, the children got to examine the contents of a real owl pellet! The children were great investigators and had a blast with this project. They were very excited about taking their findings home to show you!
