What have we been learning?

In Reader's Workshop, we have been building our super powers by learning what to do when we get to a word we don't know in our reading.  By using our super powers, we are able to tackle more challenging books.

When your child is reading to you and they get stuck, use the following questions to help them:
  • Can the picture help you?
  • Make it match (match voice to print)
  • Use your sound power.  Get your mouth ready and say the first sound.
Last week, we began learning how to check our reading by asking ourselves:
  • Does it make sense?
  • Does it sound right?
In writer's workshop, are are continuing to write stories.  We are really working hard at constructing a story with a beginning, middle, and ending along with working on conventions.  I'm so proud on how much progress the children have made with their writing! We will be wrapping up this unit in 2 weeks.
We began learning and working with digraphs.  We are having fun using them in words and playing games that help us practice the sounds that they make.

In math, we've been working a lot on shapes.  We've also been working on using the counting on strategy and the concept of addition during math stations by playing a game called Foxes and Den.  Click here to see a video of this game being played.

Last week, we made some yummy brownies for our buzzy celebration!  The children have been working hard being kind, safe and responsible.  So much that they have earned another celebration!

During one of our most recent Forest Friday workshops, the children had the chance to taste sap and maple syrup.  We had fun finding words to describe how they tasted.

Here are some pictures from the most recent weeks.
