Great things are happening in kindergarten as we head into Spring. With the change of the season comes a change in the expectations for these kindergarten students. The word 'Independent' is being used throughout our day as the children learn to make more choices during their academic time, especially in regards to Writing and Guided Reading. They are becoming more invested in their learning and making good choices that involve some creative ideas. One such idea came about after I had read a series of 'Three Little Pigs' books in which the authors and illustrators put their own spin on this traditional folktale. We had so much fun reading and listening to them that the children wanted to write their own version during Writer's Workshop. This week they have been so focused and invested in their work that they actually whined a little each time I had to ring the chime to signal the stop to our writers time. I actually made a picture on the whiteboard indicating how I felt with the saying, " It makes me so happy that you are so sad about having to stop writing!" They are almost finished with their stories and are very excited for the chance to read them to the class on Monday or Tuesday of next week in our popular Author's Chair! The children also had a chance to vote for their favorite version and will be writing about why they chose the particular book in an upcoming writing activity.
vity.
