Rocks, Rocks, and More Rocks

Rocks was our theme during our latest Four Winds workshop.  What is a rock?  The children learned that rocks are pieces of Earth and are made up on minerals.  Our wonderful volunteers came in and taught us also about ways rocks are formed.  We learned that igneous rocks are formed from fire, such as through volcanoes.  Sedimentary rocks are formed when tiny rock pieces are deposited into layers over time in which these layers are pressed and the bottom layers slowly turn into rocks.  Metamorphic rocks are formed when a change happens and a new rock is formed.  This change occurs when there is a lot of pressure build up, which causes heat, and this causes the rocks to change.

The children rotated through 3 different stations that had them sorting rocks, looking at their attributes, and looking at the different stages of specific rocks.

Ask your child what he or she learned about rocks.

Here are some pictures taken from the workshop.
