Is it a 2D shape or a 3D shape?
November's calendar markers feature two- and three- dimensional shapes (flat and solid shapes): squares, cubes, circles, spheres, cones, rectangles, and cylinders. Each day, the children are having many opportunities to identify, describe, analyze, and compare these shapes. In addition, we have explored the relationships between these shapes.
Calendar Collector
This month, we are collecting craft sticks. Each day, the Number Corner helper spins a spinner to determine how many sticks are added to the collection. At the end of the week, we count how many sticks we collected. We are also using the craft sticks for some comparing and measuring activities. At the end of the month, we will estimate how many sticks we've collected over the three week period.
Days in School
We are continuing to counting how many days we've been in school using links, ten frames and a number line. The children have also used drawings and numbers on a whiteboard to solve and show their thinking to the following problem: There are ___ dots on the ten-frame. How many more dots do we need to make 10?
Computational Fluency
This month we are playing two different games, Spill the Beans and Plunk It, that have us working on combinations of five. Ask your child to show you 2 different ways to make 5 using their fingers.
Number Line
This month we are counting forward and backward from 1 to 25. They have learned that the 20 family always begins with the number 2. We've been playing a game called Hop High, Count Low, which is an activity that reinforces backward counting. We have also been playing a game that practices identifying numbers that come before and after a specific number. Lastly, we have continued to practice numeral writing in our Number Corner Student Notebooks.
