We have been continuing to work around the number 5 this week in our math lessons. The children are becoming stronger with subitizing (instantly seeing how many) dots on a five-frame. They were introduced this week to the ten-frame, which they noticed that it was 2 five-frames put together. This week, the children worked on recognizing the number of dots in a collection of 5 or fewer using the ten-frames. They also built what they saw using their own ten-frame and cubes. We also continued to represent the number of dots with our fingers.
Two new math stations were introduced this week: Beat You to Five and Which Numeral Will Win?. In Beat You to Five, partners take turns spinning the spinner and placing the indicated number of cubes on their side of their side of the game board. The first player to cover all 5 cubes exactly wins.
In Which Numeral Will Win?, the children practice writing numerals on a recording sheet. They trace over the number they spin, continuing in the rows until one row is complete.
Some of the other math stations that the children have been completing include putting numbers 1-20 in order using links, playing a card game that has them reading numbers 1-15 with accuracy, building numbers 0-9 with Legos, and a write the room activity that has them working on 1 to 1 correspondence (counting a set of objects correctly). Ask your child what their favorite station has been so far.
In Number Corner, we've continued to look at our pattern, going on shape hunts, and counting forwards and backwards from 0-10 and 10-0 with Hap. We also estimated how many cubes we've collected in the last 3 weeks. Then, using the ten-frames, we counted the cubes by 1's and by 10's.
