After reading the book Snowmen at Night, I posed the question "Why do you think the snowmen drink cold cocoa instead of hot cocoa. Many of the responses included "because it's cold outside." Their responses led us to carry out an experiment with snow. I had gathered some snow in a bucket. The first part of the experiment had me pouring ice cold water onto the snow. The children made observations. A majority of the class noticed the snow melted some. In the second part of the experiment, I poured hot water onto the snow. The children immediately noticed that the hot water had melted almost all the snow and there was a lot of water in the bucket.
After the experiment, the children drew and labeled their observations in their science notebooks. They even wrote a sentence about what they noticed.
Another activity that the children did around this book, was creating a snowman using torn paper. After, they wrote a sentence explaining what they would do if they were a snowman at night.
