Literacy Update

In writer's workshop we have been learning about speech bubbles and how to use them when writing books. We've looked at student examples and how Mo Willems, a famous author, has used speech bubbles in his Pigeon books (a class favorite). The children have also been finding them in other books in our classroom library. This week, the children will be writing their own Pigeon book, which they are hoping to share with you on December 20th for our Family Celebration.

We officially started our reader's workshop (12:35-1:00) this week. Our mini-lessons focused on discussing what is a reader, what readers like to read, what it looks like to read and how readers take care of our books, and how to choose books in our classroom library for our book boxes. The children were very excited to choose books for their book boxes (they can choose 5), which are switched out every Friday. As guided reading groups are beginning, they will also get "just right" books for their book boxes so that they can become stronger readers and practice using reading strategies.

Literacy Stations have been in place since the beginning of October. One of the stations the children have been using an word app on the IPADS to spell sight words and friends names. At the ABC station the children have been building friends names using letter tiles, finding our new letters of the week in magazines and cutting them out, and building letters/words using wiki sticks (wax covered yarn). The children have also been playing Zingo and Letter Go Fish at the Games and Puzzles Station.

This week the children completed an art activity based on the letter W. The built a wagon using shapes out of construction paper. Then, they wrote the letter w on the wheels and drew something that began with the letter w in their wagon. Ask your child what he or she drew.
