An Update in Literacy

The letters Jj and Pp were introduced to the children. We brainstormed words that began with each of these letters, which is becoming much easier now that we've done it so often!

Wordle: JJ

Wordle: PP

Also in Fundations, we have been learning about punctuation. We've learned the difference between a period and a question mark. We've created sentences using sentence frames and putting the appropriate punctuation mark at the end. We have also been discussing when we use an uppercase letter and when we use lowercase letters. See if your child can point out a period and a question mark in books.

Literacy stations have continued to be a big hit in our classroom! The children have really enjoyed the stations and are disappointed when we don't have them. The children have continued to work on word awareness skills and letter formation. They are continuing to use the Starfall website as well. After reading the book Leaf Man by Lois Elhert, the children created their own Leaf Man stories at the art station. They did a fantastic job with cutting the small pieces, adding details to their pictures, and creating a story about their Leaf Man. The children's stories and pictures are hanging beautifully in our classroom.

A few weeks ago, we had read the book Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown to introduce the idea of using prior knowledge to help us better understand the story. Throughout the story, I modeled how we could use this strategy in our day to day reading and then the children got to practice. This is a great comprehension strategy that we will continue to use throughout the year.
