Celebrating the 100th Day of School

We made the number 100 with our bodies!
On Thursday, we celebrated the 100th day of school.  We had a day filled with activities around the number 100.

In the morning we had a 100 Cup Challenge.  In this STEM challenge, the children were placed into groups of 3 and were given 100 cups.  They had to create the tallest tower possible using their 100 cups within 20 minutes.  That seemed like an easy task, but it proved to be harder than it looked at the cups feel pretty easily.
In the afternoon, we completed an estimation activity that had us thinking about which jar held 100 items.  The children had to discuss with their math partner their thinking.  Some children thought the the jar with the Hershey Kisses held 100 because it was a filled to the top.  One child thought the pasta because the Hershey Kisses were big and she didn't think 100 could fit in the jar.  Another child thought the white chocolate chips since they were the smallest and you only need a small amount to make it be 100.

After a few children shared their thinking with the group, we took on the challenge and counted the items in each jar by 1's.  We found there were 61 Hershey Kisses, 93 pieces of pasta, and 100 white chocolate chips!

Our last activity for the day had us participating in the 100th Day Stations Galore.  There were 9 stations all focused on the 100th day.  The children got to choose which stations they wanted to complete and used their fancy 100th Day Punch card.  These stations were a hit, especially making a 100 day necklace using Fruit Loops!

We also had fun creating a fun art and writing project.  The children had created themselves at 100 years old and then wrote about what they will be doing at 100 years old.  Let me just say, you all will still be living and your child will still be living with you!
