Skull Sleuthing

On Wednesday our Four Winds volunteers presented us a great workshop on skulls.  We learned all about skulls and how skulls can tell us a lot about animals.  We also looked at the placement of teeth and how we can use this information in identifying the animal that it belongs to.  For example a mole, which is an insect eater, has short, sharp pointy teeth and a squirrel, which is a plant eater, has flat molars for grinding.  Some key vocabulary that the children were introduced to included: insectivore, carnivore, omnivore, herbivore.

The children got to explore and investigate some real life skulls.  They also investigated their own teeth by eating different types of food (popcorn, carrots, and licorice) and sharing where in their mouth they were biting and chewing the food items.  Lastly, using a skull template, they made up their own imaginary creature and decided what it was going to eat.
